Introduction
Basics of Game Programming – Career Coaching is intended for young people aged 17-29 from Oulu who are interested in game programming. During the career coaching, participants will be guided through the use of the C# language and Unity via two predefined personal game projects. The career coaching provides participants with a clear understanding of how a game project progresses from start to finish from a programmer’s perspective.
Goals
During the career coaching, participants will work guidedly on two predefined personal game projects. The goal is to provide a clear understanding of the progression of a game project from a programming perspective and to build a knowledge base for continuing independent game development. The aim is to inspire enthusiasm for game programming and the use of Unity.
The goal of the career coaching is to focus on the following content:
- Using Unity (2D and 3D)
- Basics of C# Programming for Game Development
- Implementing Game Mechanics (movement, collisions, interactions)
- Building User Interfaces in Unity
- Git Version Control at an Individual Level
- Publishing Games in the Browser (WebGL)
- Visual Polishing of Games (“Juicing”)
- Continuing Self-Learning: Where to Find Materials, Unity Learn, YouTube
- Job Search (CV, Portfolio, Git, Itch)
Equipment
The career coaching utilizes the computers in Byström’s game and media room, which are equipped with the necessary software for game development, such as Unity, Visual Studio, Blender, and Adobe software like Photoshop and Substance 3D Painter. The equipment also includes four drawing tablets.
Participation
Basics of Game Programming – Career Coaching is held once a year as a 10-day career coaching session at Byström’s game and media room, located at Hallituskatu 5. The event takes place in July, and application periods are announced separately. Applying is easy through the application link provided on the website when the application period is open. Young unemployed job seekers aged 17-29 from Oulu can apply. Applicants must verify their eligibility for career coaching before applying.
